This week-long summer camp is about connecting you with the resources and peer mentors you need to help you grow your voice. We will explore topics selected by the SPOKES youth advisory board that get us thinking critically about our role in our communities and urge us to use our art in response.
Join us alongside artists, organizers, and other youth from throughout the Bay, for a week of free workshops and performances dedicated to helping you level up as writers, performers, and organizers of your own revolutionary art spaces.
This summer camp is open to teens throughout the Bay aged 13-19 with priority for San Francisco youth — SF participants can even get paid $100 for attending! Spots are LIMITED.

Join BHS Girls Tennis
Are you a tennis player looking for a fun, competitive community with a bunch of awesome people? If so, come try out for the BHS Girls Tennis Team! Are you interested in space stations, rocket ships, or astronauts?
Come to a special meeting of the Berkeley High Aviation Club to hear from two brothers who are both NASA engineers. Ask them anything you ever wanted to ask a NASA engineer. They will join us live via zoom from NASA in Huntsville, Alabama. This event will take place Tuesday May 28 at lunch. We will start promptly at 11:45am in room C335 – please come on time! You don’t have to be a member of the Aviation Club to attend – everyone is always welcome. But this is also a good time to join the Aviation Club if you want to build and fly remote control planes and drones, learn about opportunities to fly real planes, and watch movies and plan events related to aviation. We officially meet every Tuesday at lunch in room C335 and we also fly remote control planes at Cesar Chavez Park at the Berkeley marina most Sunday mornings at 10am.

The Changemaker Project
The Changemaker Project is a 501(c)3 nonprofit empowering youth around the world to create social change. We’ve partnered with schools in 35+ countries to offer a curriculum and platform for students to create meaningful change in their communities. The program can be implemented in any project-based learning course, or as an after-school club. We teach kids about various social justice issues and the connections between them, and then we guide students through Stanford’s Design Thinking process to help them develop an innovative solution to a problem they care about. Each February, we host a Global Pitch event in which students can win funding for their ideas, and for the next three months we pair students with mentors who support them on their projects. The program culminates in our Changemaker Showcase (happening on June 2nd this year!) where we honor and celebrate our students as they present their finished projects and the impact they’ve made.
We’ve worked with Berkeley High since our very first cohort in 2018 (check out some BHS alumni sharing their experiences in this 1-min video.) We’d love to continue the partnership but we are seeking support from a staff member who is interested in championing the program at BHS.

Apply to join The Buzz, The Jacket’s Podcast, and get class credit!
We cover stories about Berkeley High culture and events, and the Berkeley community as a whole. Some of our favorite stories this year have been about: Rally Day, relationships and dating in high school, and a community group that awards small acts of kindness.
We are looking for applicants to join a fun team of audio storytellers who want to put together a bi-monthly podcast. Learn to come up with story ideas, interview, draft scripts and edit audio.
We are also looking for a dedicated audio editor with previous experience with Soundtrap or another editing platform/sound engineering. We’re thinking someone with an affinity for mixing music would be great.
Applications are due May 24th.

BHS JAZZ CONCERTS
Come see the FINAL BHS Jazz Concerts of the year! Hot on the heels of the amazing Salsa Party last Friday (thanks for coming!), our bands are ready to play more fabulous music for you!
All shows start at 7:00 p.m. and are at Florence Schwimley Little Theatre at BHS.
$10 general admission, tix at the door. Free for under 18, BUSD students and staff. Bring family and friends! We will have food and swag for sale.
We have added one concert on Tuesday night to allow our student-led COMBOS to play! That concert is FREE for all!

Business Team & Web Team on the BHS Jacket
The Berkeley High Jacket is opening up applications for writers, illustrators, photographers, and layout. Come to the application writing workshop on May 15th, in the CCC during 5th period to get help with writing applications and to ask questions! Applications are due May 24th.
The Jacket is also excited to announce that we are opening up applications for the business team and web team. You don’t have to have any experience to apply. We are a completely student run newspaper that publishes biweekly. Applications are due Friday, May 10th. Please consider applying!

Berkeley High Girls Flag Football Team
Any interest in joining the hottest new sport in the world?? Berkeley High Girls Flag Football Team is hosting summer workouts starting June 18th for those who are interested in seeing if this is a sport for you. 2024 BHS CARNIVAL
FRIDAY, MAY 24
JACKET STADIUM
We are excited to announce that the 2024 Carnival is almost here. Food, friends, fun, come out to enjoy this end of the year school wide celebration. Splash a staff member in the dunk tank. Compete with your friends in the human orbs. Chill and relax alongside your classmates with a sno cone, cotton candy and other goodies. There will also be a video game truck, big wheel races, karaoke and other surprises.

Hello Returning Student-Athletes,
The clearance registration portal for 24-25 is open. Remember, it is best to get a physical anytime from now to the beginning of August to ensure that the physical is good for the whole sports year (early August to early May).
Go to berkeleyhighathletics.org and follow the links to Athlete Registration. There are helpful FAQs, tutorials, and links to forms, local clinics that perform sports physicals, optional summer workout opportunities, and much more.

The 2024-25 Club Registration form is NOW OPEN.
We are now accepting registrations for all new and returning clubs. You will need two student leaders, a certificated staff sponsor and a place you meet on campus. You can register and submit all documents at the link below.

We plan to host a small club fair on 9th grade orientation day on August 9th, so we hope to see a solid group there. The fall club fair will take place about 3-4 weeks into the school year.

Friday Night Splash! Pool Party:
The sun is out, the weather is getting warmer, that only means one thing, SUMMER! Come join us
on May 24th for the City of Berkeley’s Friday Night Splash! Pool Party for Teens. Bring your swimsuit,
towel, friends and come ready to party from 6pm to 9pm at West Campus Pool. There will be food
and a DJ. Must bring a Valid BUSD school ID and must be in grade 6th -8th to attend. Sign up online

Teen Night:
Every Friday night from 5-9pm, YAP (Young Adult Project) offers a fun, safe space to hang out with
you and your friends. Come play basketball, video games, watch movies, eat snacks and food or just
hang out with your friends.
Teen Family Camping Trip:
The Teens Family Camping Trip is a once in a life time opportunity to see a side of the City of
Berkeley that not everyone gets an opportunity to see. Located in the mountains close to Yosemite,
we bring teens and their families up to Berkeley Family Tuolumne camp to get away from the city
life and enjoy a fun and relaxing time out in nature. We take families on fun hikes, allow the teens
to swim and fish and bring everyone together for meals and smores around the campfire.
Teen Echo Lake Camping Trip:
Time to put down the phones and tables, TV remotes and video game controllers (only for one
weekend) because in August, we also have the Teen Echo Lake Camping Trip. This is an amazing
opportunity for teens to get away from home for a weekend, see the Lovely South side of Lake
Tahoe, and get to see a different side of what the City of Berkeley has to offer.

Notification of Non-Discrimination Policy
The Berkeley Unified School District is committed to providing a hostile-free working and learning environment. The District prohibits discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity/expression, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding/lactation status (related medical conditions), religion, color, national origin (including language restrictions and possession of a driver’s license (issued under Vehicle Code), ancestry, immigration status, physical or mental disability (including clinical depression and bipolar disorder, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, epilepsy, seizure disorder, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and heart attack), medical condition (cancer-related and genetic characteristics), military and veteran status, marital status, registered domestic partner status, age (40 and above), genetic information, political belief or affiliation (unless union related), a person’s association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics, or any other basis protected by federal, state or local law, ordinance, or regulation in any program or activity it conducts or to which it provides significant assistance.
Discrimination is different treatment based on a protected characteristic in the context of an educational program, work or activity without a legitimate, nondiscriminatory reason that interferes with or limits the individual’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by the District or includes an adverse employment action.
Hostile environment harassment occurs when a target is subjected to unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic, which is both subjectively offensive to the target and would be offensive to a reasonable person of similar circumstances/characteristics and is sufficiently so severe, and so pervasive to interfere with or limit an individual’s ability to effectively work or to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or opportunities offered by the District. Harassment may take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling, graphic and written statements, or any conduct that may be threatening or humiliating. Harassment based on any of the above protected categories is a form of unlawful discrimination and will not be tolerated by the District and can result in disciplinary action against the offending student or employee.
Upon witnessing an act of discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived protected characteristics, school personnel are required to take immediate steps to intervene when it is safe to do so. Once a school/office has expressed notice or reason to know of such conduct, whether carried out by employees, students, or third parties, it should take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate, determine what occurred, take prompt and effective steps reasonably calculated to end the conduct, eliminate a hostile environment, if one has been created and prevent the conduct from occurring again. These steps should be taken regardless of whether an individual makes a complaint or asks the school/office to take action. Complaints are protected from retaliation. The District prohibits retaliation against any person who files a complaint or an appeal, reports instances of noncompliance, discrimination, harassment, bullying, and intimidation, or who participates in the complaint-filing or investigation process. This nondiscriminatory policy applies to all acts related to school activity or school attendance within any school/office under the jurisdiction of the Berkeley Unified School District.
