Do you want to help raise awareness about mental health needs and resources at Berkeley High?
Apply to join the Mental Health Peer Educators today! In the Mental Health Peer Educators, you will learn about mental health topics and gain skills to provide support for your friends and other peers. We will meet weekly on Thursdays during 7th period starting on Thursday February 22nd.
Applications are due Wednesday February 7th at 4pm.

Support the Black Student Union
The Berkeley High BSU is selling long sleeves and hoodies until February 11th to fundraise for events this month and the rest of the school year.
You can either buy a shirt/hoodie, donate, or both! They will be delivered at the end of the month, and we’ll take a group photo with all our supporters once they arrive! You can have it delivered to your home or to the school and pick them up in H102A.

The All Blues Girls Rugby Spring Season is coming up!
All Blues, Girls Rugby is a High School Rugby Team that is for everyone and anyone, no experience required. We are open for registration to play in this spring season! Disc Golf Club
The disc golf club is a new club for students to have fun learning how to play disc golf, playing disc golf, and getting involved in the disc golf scene. The club is open for anyone to join, both beginners and more experienced players. You don’t even have to own any discs to join the club, just show up to our bi-weekly lunch meetings in G204 (G building side of the breezeway), and if you want to come play, we will provide you with some discs.
We will also be at the club fair, so sign up by signing up at the club fair, or emailing berkeleyhighdiscgolfclub@gmail.com. We hope to see you there.

Chess club wants invite all students to join chess club
Chess club is a fun and exciting experience where students can learn to play chess. Chess club is open to all students and even if you already know how to play chess we still encourage you to show up. Chess club also hosts regular tournaments and is an inclusive place open to all levels. We meet outside the M building near the basketball courts at lunch on Thursdays. We hope that you visit us at the club fair on Thursdays if you are interested in joining. Also feel free to come any Thursday during lunch to sign up.

Berkeley High Softball tryouts start next Monday, February 5th, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Please meet at the softball field at 4:15 pm with your softball gear and softball attire. No experience is necessary and some gear will be provided. For any questions email coach Jason Kaneko at jkcma5@gmail.com.

EAOP is recruiting 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students! The UC Berkeley Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) is a college access program for Berkeley High students who identify as first-generation college, underrepresented, and/or low-income. Students only have to identify with at least one of these 3 identities to be eligible to apply and you can see definitions for these identities in the flyer below. Students in this program benefit from meetings with their college adviser, college/career events, free summer programs at UC Berkeley, college application and financial aid support, and more!

Prom & Attendance Reminders
Hello Juniors and Seniors – Prom is coming up in March and we want everyone to be eligible. Remember that you cannot have more than 30 unexcused period absences and no suspensions in 2024 to be able to go to prom. If you have more than 30 unexcused absences, make sure you clear your absences through tutorial make ups and you can earn three hours of attendance makes by going to Saturday School on Saturday, February 24th from 9am to 12pm.

Help Plant Trees!
The City of Berkeley needs your help to plant new trees at Aquatic Park. The event will take place on the west side of Aquatic Park Saturday, February 3rd, from 9am-12pm. Please RSVP by Wednesday, January 31st by emailing PRWvolunteer@berkeleyca.gov . To join the planting, meet at the Rowing Club parking lot at Aquatic Park. On the day of the event please wear closed-toed footwear and clothing that can get a bit dirty. We will supply tools and gloves. We plan to dig holes, plant trees, and install support stakes. Morning snacks along with lunch will be available for all volunteers.
This will count towards your community service hours!

Black History Month Art Submissions
The Berkeley High Jacket is opening up submission for Black History Month. We are accepting any kind of art you would like to submit (paintings, photographs, writing, etc).

SPRING SPORTS, starting Monday, Feb 5th
Baseball: 3 levels (Fr, JV, Var)
- Pending weather, tryouts are 3 days, Mon Feb 5th through Wed Feb 7th at Tim Moellering Field at 4pm sharp.
- More specific information on tryouts will be emailed out to all student-athletes registered for baseball prior to tryouts
- Wear baseball attire and spikes and bring all baseball equipment
- Make-up tryouts for winter athletes (email curtissandeford@berkeley.net)
Badminton: One coed team of around 40 (20 boys, 20 girls)
- 6pm Mon 2/5, 4pm Tue 2/6, and 4pm Wed 2/7 in the Jacket Gym
- Arrive early on the first day of tryouts to check in
- Come ready to tryout in court shoes and athletic attire with a full water bottle
- Bring personal rackets, only a limited number of rackets are available to borrow
- Students requiring make-up tryouts must email kylehayden@berkeley.net before the first day of tryouts
Crew: Boys and girls teams, each 2 levels (Novice/Var)
- Crew has been operating since August as a club sport
- Interested athletes should reach out to coaches or attend land BHS practices at 4pm (girls M & Th; boys Tu & Fri).

Track and Field: Very large coed team
- Monday Feb 5th to Friday Feb 9 at 4:50PM, meet in the athletic plaza between the portables, stadium, and softball field.
- Specific tryout information for the various event groups will be provided by email to those registered. Tryouts will end between 6:30pm and 7:30pm depending on the day and event group.
- Bring Running Shoes, Shorts and a T-Shirt you can run in, digital watch and a Water Bottle
- Tryout week is mandatory, any athlete who cannot make tryouts must email Coaches in advance.
Boys Volleyball: 2 levels (JV/Var) – each team around 10-14 athletes
- 4pm in M gym M/T/Th/F; 6pm in the Jacket gym on Wed Feb 7
- Bring gym shoes/clothes
Athletes must be CLEARED to participate in practices.

The Right Writers Club
The Right Writers Club is currently hosting a writing contest for high school students to submit their work! The winner will receive a $30 Barnes & Noble gift card.
To enter the contest, please follow the writing prompt: Write a story starting with “The moment I woke up, I knew something wasn’t right.” The story must be in less than 2000 words and it can be in any form. We are excited to see what you came up with!

Notification of Non-Discrimination Policy
The Berkeley Unified School District is committed to providing a hostile-free working and learning environment. The District prohibits discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity/expression, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding/lactation status (related medical conditions), religion, color, national origin (including language restrictions and possession of a driver’s license (issued under Vehicle Code), ancestry, immigration status, physical or mental disability (including clinical depression and bipolar disorder, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, epilepsy, seizure disorder, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and heart attack), medical condition (cancer-related and genetic characteristics), military and veteran status, marital status, registered domestic partner status, age (40 and above), genetic information, political belief or affiliation (unless union related), a person’s association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics, or any other basis protected by federal, state or local law, ordinance, or regulation in any program or activity it conducts or to which it provides significant assistance.
Discrimination is different treatment based on a protected characteristic in the context of an educational program, work or activity without a legitimate, nondiscriminatory reason that interferes with or limits the individual’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by the District or includes an adverse employment action.
Hostile environment harassment occurs when a target is subjected to unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic, which is both subjectively offensive to the target and would be offensive to a reasonable person of similar circumstances/characteristics and is sufficiently so severe, and so pervasive to interfere with or limit an individual’s ability to effectively work or to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or opportunities offered by the District. Harassment may take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling, graphic and written statements, or any conduct that may be threatening or humiliating. Harassment based on any of the above protected categories is a form of unlawful discrimination and will not be tolerated by the District and can result in disciplinary action against the offending student or employee.
Upon witnessing an act of discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived protected characteristics, school personnel are required to take immediate steps to intervene when it is safe to do so. Once a school/office has expressed notice or reason to know of such conduct, whether carried out by employees, students, or third parties, it should take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate, determine what occurred, take prompt and effective steps reasonably calculated to end the conduct, eliminate a hostile environment, if one has been created and prevent the conduct from occurring again. These steps should be taken regardless of whether an individual makes a complaint or asks the school/office to take action. Complaints are protected from retaliation. The District prohibits retaliation against any person who files a complaint or an appeal, reports instances of noncompliance, discrimination, harassment, bullying, and intimidation, or who participates in the complaint-filing or investigation process. This nondiscriminatory policy applies to all acts related to school activity or school attendance within any school/office under the jurisdiction of the Berkeley Unified School District.
