Our Monologues is opening THIS FRIDAY at the BHS Little Theater! Come see the completely student-run, original production uplifting stories submitted by Berkeley High students. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for adults, and Saturday 3/3 is Pay What You Can. Doors open at 6:30, show starts at 7:00pm.

BHS Elective Courses
It is course selection time for the Class of 2024, 2025, and 2026. Students will have the chance to choose from a wide variety of new and returning elective courses that satisfy the A-G requirements. There are electives in History, English, Math, Science, World Languages, Visual and Performing Arts as well as College Prep.

Meet the 2023 Elected Candidates
The 2023 Election Convention is quickly approaching. Very soon, the entire BHS community can read about the elected candidates striving to make positive change on our campus in The 2023 Election Handbook. This resource is broken down by position with the candidate statements, photos, social media accounts, and teacher endorsements. Eligible voters from the Class of 2024, 2025, and 2026, please take some time to review the candidates so that you can make an informed decision when ASB voting takes place in late March.

STILL OPEN ELECTED CANDIDATE POSITIONS:
a. The BSEP/SSC committee is the most powerful decision-making group on campus, composed of the principal, teachers, administrators, parents, and students. They decide on the school schedule, distribute resources to small schools and programs, and approve the school safety plans. Members also help decide what programs to fund with the $800,000 BSEP fund. Student Court, the RISE tutoring program, Afro-Haitian dance, college/career counselors, and CAS video production are just a few initiatives that have been funded through BSEP. There are 3 positions available with 2 alternates. This position will be voted on in the fall.
b. The Chief of Service ensures that BHS maintains its high reputation for providing service to the greater Berkeley and even global community. You have service requirements – the Chief of Service creates opportunities for you to have fun meeting those requirements.
c. The ASB Vice President fills the shoes of the ASB President in their absence. The ASB Vice President works with the Student Senate to receive input from the student body. Also, the Vice President works with the President to lead the executive team, and to start projects and initiatives to serve the student body.

Girls Garage
Are you interested in building, architecture, and design? Would you like to work with a diverse cohort of young women and gender-expansive youth to learn how to build some rad projects?
Checkout the Young Women’s Design and Building Institute summer program at Girls Garage! Students will learn and hone creative and vocational STEM skills, from carpentry and welding to applied math, screen printing, and architectural drafting. This free program will run from June 13th – June 16th, and from June 20th – June 23d. Apply now – applications are due March 1st!

Neurodiversity Club
The Neurodiversity Club will meet again this Friday, and every Friday during lunch, in room D218. Come hang out with us, meet others with similar interests, play games, talk, or just chill. Great minds thing differently!!

Teen Talk app
Do you need someone to talk to during these difficult times? Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, need a listening ear, or coping tools, Teen Talk App is here for you.
Teen Talk is an app for people aged 13-19 to anonymously post about whatever they may be going through and trained advisors (who are also teens) will be available to talk to you on the app between 5 and 10pm. And if you are interested in being a teen advisor, there are virtual trainings open to teens across the US. You will be able to 1) learn how to help real teens with real stories, 2) meet and train with like minded teens from across the US, 3) have a remote and flexible volunteer experience, 4) gain community service hours, and 5) have the ability to make an impact worldwide.

Cob on Wood Service (and Pizza!)
…building (mini) homes for people who need them
Date: Sunday, February 26 from 1230 – 630pm
Here is your chance to help build homes for people who need them. Cob on Wood, a small non-profit in Oakland builds tiny homes (and communities) for people experiencing homelessness. Join in for an afternoon where you will walk away seeing the impact of a day’s work.
Location: We begin and end our day at B’nai Tikvah. Then travel together to Cob on Wood in Oakland
You will spend the afternoon plastering, painting, and tiling 1-2 homes at Cob on Wood’s site. The adventure will also include learning more about the mission of Cob on Wood, poverty alleviation strategies, and pizza with the growing community of teens like you dedicated to changing the world.
Teens attending should plan to wear long sleeves and long pants; close-toed shoes (boots preferred) and hats. Water bottles, gloves, and KN95 masks (to keep out construction site dust) should also be brought. (We will have masks and gloves if your teen doesn’t have them.)
Covid Note: We do ask that participating teens be vaccinated for Covid. In the event that a teen is not vaccinated, they will need to send in a negative Covid test the morning of the event and will be asked to wear masks while on site.
Please use this form to register your teen to participate in this afternoon event. If your teen is already enrolled in CCM’s “Impact Builder”, no fee is needed to participate as this workshop is included in the annual program cost. All other teens are welcome for a subsidized program fee of $20 which includes pizza lunch, transportation, educator costs, and honorariums to the nonprofits we are visiting.
Impact Builder is part of the national “Better to Serve” program, operated by a prominent national Jewish Foundation. Costs are supplemented by the program. CCM works to make all programming accessible for all teens, regardless of their ability to pay.

Prom 2023: A Secret Garden

No in & out privileges for any reason.
Prom 2023 plans to be a memorable evening with the city skyline as a beautiful backdrop. Guests can expect light food options, activities, and free photobooth pictures. This will be a Class of 2023 & 2024 exclusive event, meaning that no students from the Class of 2025 or 2026 may attend. We wanted to let you know that nominations are now open for the second annual Eli Kane (BHS ‘19) Spirit Award. Anyone can nominate a current 22-23 Berkeley High School Junior or Senior and the deadline for nominations is March 12.

Guest Speaker for the E-Sports Club
The BHS E-sports Club will be hosting a Technical Game Designer from Riot Games, Ko Costerella, a Berkeley High Alumni. It will be held Thursday, February 23 in G211. His job consists of coding and coming up with new game ideas. Bring your friends to listen to his experiences and ask your own questions! Please submit questions beforehand in the google form linked in our Instagram @BHS_Esports_Club, or ask them the day of!

Join the fun, competitive, data driven hobby of fantasy baseball. We are in the process of organizing a league that will determine who can put together the best team at Berkeley High. The BHS Green Team and Bay Area Volunteer Club would like you to sign a petition about the Green New Deal!
For those who don’t know, the Green New Deal is a climate legislation that aims to combat climate change by bringing the US to net-zero emissions. It plans to do this by investing in electric vehicles, clean energy, reducing pollution, and more!
This petition is asking Congress and the president to pass the Green New Deal.

Notification of Non-Discrimination Policy
The Berkeley Unified School District is committed to providing a hostile-free working and learning environment. The District prohibits discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity/expression, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding/lactation status (related medical conditions), religion, color, national origin (including language restrictions and possession of a driver’s license (issued under Vehicle Code), ancestry, immigration status, physical or mental disability (including clinical depression and bipolar disorder, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, epilepsy, seizure disorder, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and heart attack), medical condition (cancer-related and genetic characteristics), military and veteran status, marital status, registered domestic partner status, age (40 and above), genetic information, political belief or affiliation (unless union related), a person’s association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics, or any other basis protected by federal, state or local law, ordinance, or regulation in any program or activity it conducts or to which it provides significant assistance.
Discrimination is different treatment based on a protected characteristic in the context of an educational program, work or activity without a legitimate, nondiscriminatory reason that interferes with or limits the individual’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by the District or includes an adverse employment action.
Hostile environment harassment occurs when a target is subjected to unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic, which is both subjectively offensive to the target and would be offensive to a reasonable person of similar circumstances/characteristics and is sufficiently so severe, and so pervasive to interfere with or limit an individual’s ability to effectively work or to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or opportunities offered by the District. Harassment may take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling, graphic and written statements, or any conduct that may be threatening or humiliating. Harassment based on any of the above protected categories is a form of unlawful discrimination and will not be tolerated by the District and can result in disciplinary action against the offending student or employee.
Upon witnessing an act of discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived protected characteristics, school personnel are required to take immediate steps to intervene when it is safe to do so. Once a school/office has expressed notice or reason to know of such conduct, whether carried out by employees, students, or third parties, it should take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate, determine what occurred, take prompt and effective steps reasonably calculated to end the conduct, eliminate a hostile environment, if one has been created and prevent the conduct from occurring again. These steps should be taken regardless of whether an individual makes a complaint or asks the school/office to take action. Complaints are protected from retaliation. The District prohibits retaliation against any person who files a complaint or an appeal, reports instances of noncompliance, discrimination, harassment, bullying, and intimidation, or who participates in the complaint-filing or investigation process. This nondiscriminatory policy applies to all acts related to school activity or school attendance within any school/office under the jurisdiction of the Berkeley Unified School District.
