NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Students & Staff can receive free at-home COVID tests before winter break and ahead of the Spring 2022 vaccination mandate. See recent email from Mr. Raygoza.

Student ID Cards Will Be Required in January

In an increased effort to maintain campus safety and also to help us hold students accountable for being in class, you will be required to carry your student ID with you at all times during the school day. This includes when you enter through the main office doors or when you leave the classroom to go to the bathroom, health center, counseling office, or any other location on campus and you can expect to be asked for your ID by administrators and safety officers if you are out of class during the class period. This new policy will be effective January 3, 2022 (the start of second semester).

If you have not yet taken a school ID photo this school year, please come see Ms. Tiffany Sutherland in the main office today (Tuesday 12/14) at lunch or after school between 3:30-4:30pm so you can take a new photo. If you require a reprint because you lost your ID you may also come see her for a complimentary replacement card. After January 3rd, any replacement ID will carry a fee of $10.

The Guardian Project Has Expanded Capacity

The Guardian Project is a non-profit founded in 2015 that offers free martial arts to youth. Guardian has recently moved to South Berkeley on Sacramento St, less than one mile away from Berkeley High. With this move they are accepting new students ages 14-18 interested in learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.This program will focus on the grappling side of MMA with takedowns, dominant ground control, and submission attacks. Last week we boosted our age range another 2 years so now all high schoolers will be eligible (ages 14-18).

Watch their updated video https://we.tl/t-cTtJVV3t6X

All students will be 100% sponsored to take classes, provided training gear, and the chance to compete in local tournaments if interested. This program has limited availability, if you are interested in enrollment please apply at guardiangym.org

For any questions you can follow Guardian on instagram at @guardiangym.

This is a local Berkeley organization that is not affiliated with BHS/BUSD.

Senior Letter

Hey Class of 2022, plans are building for all things related to prom and graduation among other activities. We wish you a joyous and celebratory spring semester so stay on top of your commitments by reviewing the Class of 2022 Senior Letter. The newest updates are about senior portraits, cap & gown, free & reduced meals verification, and dates for prom. Here are a few highlights:

Although Prestige Portraits will not be able to return to campus, you can still visit their Hayward office to get your portrait into the yearbook by January. In addition, the cost of purchasing a cap & gown will go up after winter break, so purchase your cap & gown soon or request a loaner. There are no gender assignments for the color of the gown so you can select red or gold.

Learn more about portrait packages at:

Prestigeportraits.com

If you need to reschedule, please reach out to: byarea@lifetouch.com

If you do not get a response, then call 1-800-736-4753.

If you believe that your family qualifies for free & reduced meals, please complete the EZ Meal app online. This is the only way to receive discounts for prom or graduation tickets, along with a yearbook discount. You can visit C327 with your eligibility letter to pay the reduced yearbook price of $65 in the next month. Prom is scheduled for March 19 at the Galleria so be on the lookout for more details in January. Tickets should go on sale on Valentine’s Day for all BHS seniors and juniors. See the senior letter for more details about prom and other senior activities.

January 10 Make Up Photo Day

Please note that there will be a makeup photo day on January 10 for all students who have yet to take a school ID photo. Berkeley High will begin requiring all current BHS students to have an ID with them on campus. More details about replacing a lost ID card will be shared around winter break.

Notification of Non-Discrimination Policy

The Berkeley Unified School District is committed to providing a hostile-free working and learning environment. The District prohibits discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity/expression, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding/lactation status (related medical conditions), religion, color, national origin (including language restrictions and possession of a driver’s license (issued under Vehicle Code), ancestry, immigration status, physical or mental disability (including clinical depression and bipolar disorder, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, epilepsy, seizure disorder, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and heart attack), medical condition (cancer-related and genetic characteristics), military and veteran status, marital status, registered domestic partner status, age (40 and above), genetic information, political belief or affiliation (unless union related), a person’s association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics, or any other basis protected by federal, state or local law, ordinance, or regulation in any program or activity it conducts or to which it provides significant assistance.

Discrimination is different treatment based on a protected characteristic in the context of an educational program, work or activity without a legitimate, nondiscriminatory reason that interferes with or limits the individual’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by the District or includes an adverse employment action.

Hostile environment harassment occurs when a target is subjected to unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic, which is both subjectively offensive to the target and would be offensive to a reasonable person of similar circumstances/characteristics and is sufficiently so severe, and so pervasive to interfere with or limit an individual’s ability to effectively work or to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or opportunities offered by the District. Harassment may take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling, graphic and written statements, or any conduct that may be threatening or humiliating. Harassment based on any of the above protected categories is a form of unlawful discrimination and will not be tolerated by the District and can result in disciplinary action against the offending student or employee.

Upon witnessing an act of discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived protected characteristics, school personnel are required to take immediate steps to intervene when it is safe to do so. Once a school/office has expressed notice or reason to know of such conduct, whether carried out by employees, students, or third parties, it should take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate, determine what occurred, take prompt and effective steps reasonably calculated to end the conduct, eliminate a hostile environment, if one has been created and prevent the conduct from occurring again. These steps should be taken regardless of whether an individual makes a complaint or asks the school/office to take action. Complaints are protected from retaliation. The District prohibits retaliation against any person who files a complaint or an appeal, reports instances of noncompliance, discrimination, harassment, bullying, and intimidation, or who participates in the complaint-filing or investigation process. This nondiscriminatory policy applies to all acts related to school activity or school attendance within any school/office under the jurisdiction of the Berkeley Unified School District.

For more information, or to file a complaint please contact:
