BHS Film Festival is taking submissions now
The BHS Film Festival has started taking submissions! Fill out the google form above any time from now to March 30 to enter your film into the festival. Submissions will be judged by the club, and the winners will be announced on the festival date. No films with any pornographic, racist, homophobic, sexist, xenophobic, or able-ist material will be accepted and films must be less than 8 minutes long. Good luck, and get creative!

The GSA is happy to announce that we will be selling t-shirts!
The shirts will have two different designs, OUT and THE FUTURE IS QUEER, and have various pride flag colors. We will be selling them on Tuesday and Friday 10/12 and 10/15 in front of the Donahue Gym, and we will take cash and credit card for payment. Each shirt will cost $20.

Jazz @ Lunch returns this Friday
Ba-da-bass and rattling drums on a rumbling stage…This Friday at lunch, Jazz Band Director Ms. Cline will present to Berkeley High the Four O’Clock Band. The concert will take place by the portables between M gym and Jacket stadium. Tables and chairs will be set up.

For anyone interested in joining the wrestling team this year, there will be a pre-season meeting next Tuesday (October 12th) in room H112 at lunch. Don’t have any idea what the sport is about? This is the time to learn. Want to meet the team? We’ll be there.

Would you like to change the world?
Get nominated for The Changemaker Project!
The Changemaker Project is a social justice leadership course, mentoring program, and design challenge for teens. TCP is looking for nominations of students with a passion for leadership and activism.
In the program, students from around the world join a live course each Wednesday @ 4pm to learn about social and climate justice issues, develop unique social impact projects, and build community with other activists from around the globe. You can win funding for your projects at Global Pitch, and receive mentorship throughout the year as you build and launch your projects.
Berkeley High has been participating in The Changemaker Project for the last four years, and our teams have won funding every year.
In order to participate, you must be nominated by a BHS staff member or TCP alum. The deadline to be nominated has been extended to Oct. 8th. If you’re interested in joining, ask a teacher to nominate you by giving your name to Matt Albinson (mattalbinson@berkeley.net) by this Friday, Oct. 8th. The Guardian Project is Offering Free Martial Arts

The Guardian Project is a 501c3 non-profit founded in 2015 that offers free martial arts to youth. Guardian has recently moved to South Berkeley at 3007 Sacramento St, less than one mile away from Berkeley High. With this move they are accepting new students ages 14-16 interested in learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.This program will focus on the grappling side of MMA with takedowns, dominant ground control, and submission attacks. All students will be 100% sponsored to take classes, provided training gear, and the chance to compete in local tournaments if interested. Classes will be held Monday-Friday 5pm-6pm beginning in mid October. Masks will be required.

Join 9th Grade Leadership!
Hey Class of 2025, Rep your hive! Even if you have not thought of yourself as a leader, you should consider adding your name to the 9th Grade Leadership Lottery. Instead of an election or interview, ASB Leadership will be conducting a lottery to select one representative from each Hive and an additional five students from any hive.
Over the course of 10-12 weeks as a team, you will work on a team fundraiser, decide on an activity where you will spend those funds, and collaborate on a 9th grade community campaign. We hope that many of you in the Class of 2025 will enter into this Leadership Lottery starting today up until the deadline of October 8th. The team will be selected on lucky October 13th.

STEMinist Club Presents Robotics Month
Are you interested in learning about careers in robotics? Join the STEMinist Club’s exploration of the field during October! Hear from women guest speakers who are working in the industry right now. This includes Lisa Winter, a BattleBots Judge, and Ellen Novoseller, an artificial intelligence roboticist working on machine learning in healthcare. Introductory programming workshops, circuit kits, and a tour to the UC Berkeley Robot Learning Lab will be conducted as well. Join us in G213 on Wednesdays during lunch!
STEMinist Club Mission: Our mission is to create a safe and encouraging environment for people who are interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and gender inequality issues, all while bringing awareness to the underrepresentation of women in STEM.

Want to MAKE something awesome?
Are you interested in Art, Design, or learning how to work with tools?
Sign up for the BHS Skateboard Workshop and build your own skateboard!
This workshop will take a small group of students like you through the entire design process so no prior experience is necessary. From research and planning to woodworking, computer design, 3D Printing and casting you will learn as you build!
This is a very hands-on workshop where you learn safe tool use, practice craftsmanship, and use problem-solving skills to take your ideas from concept to completion. Start with raw wood and metal and walk out (roll out?) with a totally custom skateboard of your own design; built by you from scratch!

Physics Club Lecture on October 8th
The Berkeley High School Physics Club is back with their second event of the year! On October 8th, Dmitry Budker, will speak to us about the symmetries of the universe – or more specifically, how they are broken and what that means for the universe! Here is more information:
What: Breaking the Fundamental Symmetries of the Universe
Fundamental symmetries play a key role in physics. Interestingly, many of them are broken, with the most famous example being violation of spatial inversion symmetry (parity). We will discuss how fundamental symmetries are studied in the laboratory, for example, in table-top atomic and molecular physics experiments.

Notification of Non-Discrimination Policy
The Berkeley Unified School District is committed to providing a hostile-free working and learning environment. The District prohibits discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity/expression, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding/lactation status (related medical conditions), religion, color, national origin (including language restrictions and possession of a driver’s license (issued under Vehicle Code), ancestry, immigration status, physical or mental disability (including clinical depression and bipolar disorder, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, epilepsy, seizure disorder, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and heart attack), medical condition (cancer-related and genetic characteristics), military and veteran status, marital status, registered domestic partner status, age (40 and above), genetic information, political belief or affiliation (unless union related), a person’s association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics, or any other basis protected by federal, state or local law, ordinance, or regulation in any program or activity it conducts or to which it provides significant assistance.
Discrimination is different treatment based on a protected characteristic in the context of an educational program, work or activity without a legitimate, nondiscriminatory reason that interferes with or limits the individual’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by the District or includes an adverse employment action.
Hostile environment harassment occurs when a target is subjected to unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic, which is both subjectively offensive to the target and would be offensive to a reasonable person of similar circumstances/characteristics and is sufficiently so severe, and so pervasive to interfere with or limit an individual’s ability to effectively work or to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or opportunities offered by the District. Harassment may take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling, graphic and written statements, or any conduct that may be threatening or humiliating. Harassment based on any of the above protected categories is a form of unlawful discrimination and will not be tolerated by the District and can result in disciplinary action against the offending student or employee.
Upon witnessing an act of discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived protected characteristics, school personnel are required to take immediate steps to intervene when it is safe to do so. Once a school/office has expressed notice or reason to know of such conduct, whether carried out by employees, students, or third parties, it should take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate, determine what occurred, take prompt and effective steps reasonably calculated to end the conduct, eliminate a hostile environment, if one has been created and prevent the conduct from occurring again. These steps should be taken regardless of whether an individual makes a complaint or asks the school/office to take action. Complaints are protected from retaliation. The District prohibits retaliation against any person who files a complaint or an appeal, reports instances of noncompliance, discrimination, harassment, bullying, and intimidation, or who participates in the complaint-filing or investigation process. This nondiscriminatory policy applies to all acts related to school activity or school attendance within any school/office under the jurisdiction of the Berkeley Unified School District.
