Student Bulletin Video Episodes release Monday or Tuesday Student Bulletin messages release Monday & Thursday or Friday Student Bulletin Episode 4 Monday, September 21st, is Zero Emissions DayReduce Your Carbon Footprint My name is Zoe and I’m the Berkeley High Commissioner of Environmental Sustainability. Next Monday, September 21st, is Zero Emissions Day: a global, 24-hour break from the use of fossil fuels. The guidelines are simple: don’t use or burn oil, gas, or coal, and minimize or eliminate your use of electricity generated by fossil fuels. As the holiday approaches, we’ll be sharing some ways you can reduce your carbon footprint on the BHS leadership Instagram account (@juicethejackets). Finally, on Zero Emissions Day we’ll be having a “Bike Berkeley” event, with suggested routes to explore our city on two wheels. Stay tuned, and stay sustainable! Hey Berkeley High!! Are you interested in helping the environment? Would you like to learn what you can do to reduce waste? Or learn about the impacts of plastic on the environment? Are you interested in creating petitions for larger businesses to reduce waste? Do you like art? If you said yes to any of those things, or you just want to hang out, come join BHS Zero Waste! We are a club dedicated to helping the community reduce waste in easy, cheap, sustainable ways. We will do a variety of fun activities, projects, and presentations throughout the school year. Meetings are on Fridays from 4:00 – 5:00 PM. Contact us at bhszerowaste@gmail.com for the zoom link or DM us on Instagram @bhszerowaste. We hope to see you there next Friday, September 18! Environmentalists & Youth Voice Needed/ Supporting a local petition. If you are a youth environmentalist and want to help organize and plan a virtual networking/interactive presentation event for local zero waste initiatives, then please consider joining Zero Waste Youth. We are the SF Bay Area Chapter of the international organization “Zero Waste Youth.” We strive to provide opportunities and resources for young adults and high schoolers who want to contribute to the zero waste movement. If you are interested please contact info@zerowasteyouthusa.org or reach out to the director alcoronado91@gmail.com. Also, if you can spare a minute and sign a petition for a local campaign called “Switch for Sustainability.” This local campaign is youth-led and is centered around getting local grocery stores to rethink their practices and be more environmental-friendly. To start off, we have launched a petition to get Berkeley Bowl to switch from providing plastic produce bags to compostable produce bags. Signing this petition, you will be contributing to the improvement of our local community. http://chng.it/M5hdthb4vD The BHS Jacket Student Newspaper is Back! Thank you!!!!! Freshmen who enroll will be put in pairs or groups with other students in their Hive and partnered with upperclassmen mentors who can answer questions, offer advice, or just be people to talk to in a less structured environment. It will be low impact and low commitment (once a week at lunch, then it would taper off over time). UC Berkeley Offers Growth & Mentorship to BHS Students We are living through rapid, multidimensional change. We are talking about climate change, increasing global inequality, the fate of our democracy, Black Lives Matter, free higher education, universal health care, gender disparities, and to top it off, we are living through a global pandemic. Who is at the nexus of it all? YOU. Young people are taking on these challenges and spearheading movements around the world. Members of UC Berkeley would like to help. UC Berkeley is piloting a weekly panel series (via Zoom) exclusively to Berkeley High, starting on September 23rd. The panels will feature presentations from graduate students, faculty, and researchers on current social issues: the environment, poverty, democracy, race, education, health, gender, and the covid recession. Presenters will speak about their personal interest on these issues and how they are grappling with them in their work. Then they’ll answer your questions, and hear your thoughts. And they’d like to help you forge your own path! The schedule will look like this across the 8 week panel series: September 23rd: EnvironmentSeptember 30th: Poverty/InequalityOctober 7th: DemocracyOctober 14th: RaceOctober 21st: EducationOctober 28th: HealthNovember 4th: GenderNovember 11th: COVID-19 recession Mentorship:Following the panel discussion, if you are interested in:Hearing more about what is going on at UC BerkeleyStarting a local or global initiativeUnderstanding the relevance of calculus (or any of your classes!) to solve the climate crisis (or any other social issue!)Learning about opportunities awaiting you in collegeOr any other collaborative experience you would like to bring forward…… you can enlist the support of a UCB panelist though a mentorship program. Please join us, Wednesdays at 4pm. (Zoom link forthcoming). Reach out to zephyrzoidis@students.berkeley.net if you have any questions. Apply to be a poll worker! Will you be 16 by the November elections? Do you want to find a way to make sure every vote gets counted? Apply to be a poll worker! Even though California will be mainly voting by mail in November, some polling stations are required to stay open. If there aren’t enough people to work the polls, some will be forced to close. If this happens, it will be much more difficult for people who are relying on in-person voting. They would potentially have to rush to a polling station far away- and if they can’t make it in time, their vote may never be counted. With many older people who usually serve as poll workers are choosing to stay home this year due to COVID-19, there is a shortage of poll workers. This election, we need to show up. If we can’t vote, we need to make sure that those who are able to vote do. Sign up at www.pollhero.org and a high school or college student volunteer will connect you with Alameda county’s election official. Follow @pollheroproject If anyone is interested in submitting an announcement this year, there are some basic guidelines to follow: Here are the basic guidelines for submitting a bulletin:1.
