Notification of Non-Discrimination Policy

The Berkeley Unified School District is committed to providing a hostile-free working and learning environment. The District prohibits discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity/expression, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding/lactation status (related medical conditions), religion, color, national origin (including language restrictions and possession of a driver’s license (issued under Vehicle Code), ancestry, immigration status, physical or mental disability (including clinical depression and bipolar disorder, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, epilepsy, seizure disorder, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and heart attack), medical condition (cancer-related and genetic characteristics), military and veteran status, marital status, registered domestic partner status, age (40 and above), genetic information, political belief or affiliation (unless union related), a person’s association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics, or any other basis protected by federal, state or local law, ordinance, or regulation in any program or activity it conducts or to which it provides significant assistance.

Discrimination is different treatment based on a protected characteristic in the context of an educational program, work or activity without a legitimate, nondiscriminatory reason that interferes with or limits the individual’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by the District or includes an adverse employment action.

Hostile environment harassment occurs when a target is subjected to unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic, which is both subjectively offensive to the target and would be offensive to a reasonable person of similar circumstances/characteristics and is sufficiently so severe, and so pervasive to interfere with or limit an individual’s ability to effectively work or to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or opportunities offered by the District. Harassment may take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling, graphic and written statements, or any conduct that may be threatening or humiliating. Harassment based on any of the above protected categories is a form of unlawful discrimination and will not be tolerated by the District and can result in disciplinary action against the offending student or employee.

Upon witnessing an act of discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived protected characteristics, school personnel are required to take immediate steps to intervene when it is safe to do so. Once a school/office has expressed notice or reason to know of such conduct, whether carried out by employees, students, or third parties, it should take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate, determine what occurred, take prompt and effective steps reasonably calculated to end the conduct, eliminate a hostile environment, if one has been created and prevent the conduct from occurring again. These steps should be taken regardless of whether an individual makes a complaint or asks the school/office to take action. Complaints are protected from retaliation. The District prohibits retaliation against any person who files a complaint or an appeal, reports instances of noncompliance, discrimination, harassment, bullying, and intimidation, or who participates in the complaint-filing or investigation process. This nondiscriminatory policy applies to all acts related to school activity or school attendance within any school/office under the jurisdiction of the Berkeley Unified School District.

For more information, or to file a complaint please contact:District Title IX Coordinator/Compliance Officer Berkeley Unified School District, 2020 Bonar Street, Room 117, Berkeley CA 94702 Phone: (510) 486-9338; Email: complaints@berkeley.net

With Kapwing, the Turnaround is Fast & Elegant

At 8:30 am, the school bell rings to start another day. Students and staff take their spots in the classrooms across campus, getting ready to demonstrate their knowledge and revel in learning. The 8:30 am school bell also triggers the one-hour countdown to launch the daily student bulletin video for its primary editor, me.

One hour until showtime.

As the Director of Student Activities for over a decade, there was a time when students read the daily set of announcements out loud from an email printout. This practice evolved slightly to students and staff broadcasting the same email printout from an administrator’s office over the loudspeaker system. It wasn’t never certain that anyone was paying attention to the muffled voices. Enter the Covid-19 pandemic when we were all at home and needed a way to communicate many of the same community messages. The video bulletin emerged as the best way to accomplish this method and has been the go-to platform for sharing news, information, and celebrating everything noteworthy about our large high school community.

Kapwing has been my go-to provider of online video editing for the last three years. Although we have used iMovie, WeVideo, and a few other sites, Kapwing has been the most consistent and reliable source for turning out videos in a short window of time. I only have one hour work time to compress multiple bulletin submissions into a five-six minute package that will be shared across campus during second period. This work flow requires responsive tools such as the clip editor window where you can manipulate each clip’s layer, filter, audio, and animation among other elements. After developing a template for the project, I have become adept at quickly importing from Google Drive to produce bulletins. One integral tool that is now a requirement for any publicly viewed video is the auto-subtitle generator. This built-in aspect of Kapwing has saved countless hours of time and created inclusive videos that are more easily understood by everyone in the community, not just the hearing impaired. Although the auto-generator doesn’t nail every word that a speaker says 100% of the time, the interface allows for easy tweaking of the subtitles. It also creates a transcript that has sometimes been requested by teachers to use as a teaching tool for English language learners to follow along with the bulletin video.

In addition, Kapwing has included all of the tools that I need to make our school bulletin appear professional and creative. As I have become more adept with using the basic online editing features, I have experimented with the audio selections, sound effects, AI voice, and AI image generator. Some of the more hilarious episodes use the AI voice generator as it allows for one person to appear as though they are engaging with someone off-screen.

Using Sarah, a “soft and young” AI Voice to act as an interviewer

It’s 9:00 am, the video is being exported, and the download bar is approaching 100%. I like to leave about 10-15 minutes for each 5-6 minute video to fully process and be ready to download. In this small window, I work on the email portion of the bulletin that complements the video. Those two parts are crucial as there are usual links, contact information, and other details not mentioned by students in the video that can be found in the email.

Once the video is downloaded, I begin the process of sending it out to all staff, students, and families. I could save a few minutes by simply sharing the link to the video on the Kapwing website, but we like to host all of our files in our server system. The bulletin email has now been sent and in about 10-15 minutes the cacophony of intro music and student speakers will be heard bouncing around the hallways as staff push play another successful Kapwing-aided project.

Watching the student bulletin is the most common shared experience for our large campus of over 3,500 people, and it has been made much easier to achieve that lofty task with Kapwing.
