Celebrate Earth Month

Looking for a way to celebrate Earth Month? Join us after school on Friday April 12, from 3:30-6pm for a BHS Garden work day. We will be working to improve the BHS garden space and plant spring/summer crops.  No prior gardening experience necessary! Students and staff are invited to attend. We will meet at the garden by the H building.  We hope to see you there!

The Redwood Literary Magazine has just published their 19th Issue!

To celebrate there will be a Publishing Party in the library today at lunch. The celebration is open to all, so if you are interested in joining, or who have any questions about the publication stop by!

BHS Alumni Baseball Game

Join the Berkeley High Jackets on Saturday, March 30 at 10am for the BHS Alumni Baseball Game and to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Tim Moellering Field.

This will be an exciting day to honor the memory of Tim Moellering, a much-loved teacher and coach, and watch some friendly competition between BHS alumni and current student athletes.

The Berkeley Unified School District is committed to providing a hostile-free working and learning environment. Discrimination is different treatment based on a protected characteristic in the context of an educational program, work or activity without a legitimate, nondiscriminatory reason that interferes with or limits the individual’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by the District or includes an adverse employment action.

Hostile environment harassment occurs when a target is subjected to unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic, which is both subjectively offensive to the target and would be offensive to a reasonable person of similar circumstances/characteristics and is sufficiently so severe, and so pervasive to interfere with or limit an individual’s ability to effectively work or to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or opportunities offered by the District. Harassment may take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling, graphic and written statements, or any conduct that may be threatening or humiliating. Harassment based on any of the above protected categories is a form of unlawful discrimination and will not be tolerated by the District and can result in disciplinary action against the offending student or employee.

Upon witnessing an act of discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived protected characteristics, school personnel are required to take immediate steps to intervene when it is safe to do so. Once a school/office has expressed notice or reason to know of such conduct, whether carried out by employees, students, or third parties, it should take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate, determine what occurred, take prompt and effective steps reasonably calculated to end the conduct, eliminate a hostile environment, if one has been created and prevent the conduct from occurring again. These steps should be taken regardless of whether an individual makes a complaint or asks the school/office to take action. Complaints are protected from retaliation. The District prohibits retaliation against any person who files a complaint or an appeal, reports instances of noncompliance, discrimination, harassment, bullying, and intimidation, or who participates in the complaint-filing or investigation process. This nondiscriminatory policy applies to all acts related to school activity or school attendance within any school/office under the jurisdiction of the Berkeley Unified School District.

BHS Alumni Baseball Game

Join the Berkeley High Jackets on Saturday, March 30 at 10am for the BHS Alumni Baseball Game and to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Tim Moellering Field.

This will be an exciting day to honor the memory of Tim Moellering, a much-loved teacher and coach, and watch some friendly competition between BHS alumni and current student athletes.

Hostile environment harassment occurs when a target is subjected to unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic, which is both subjectively offensive to the target and would be offensive to a reasonable person of similar circumstances/characteristics and is sufficiently so severe, and so pervasive to interfere with or limit an individual’s ability to effectively work or to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or opportunities offered by the District. Harassment may take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling, graphic and written statements, or any conduct that may be threatening or humiliating. Course Selection Ends Today!

The deadline to submit requests to the Small Learning Community lottery process is this Friday March 22, 2024 at 4:00 pm. This deadline applies to 9th graders entering the lottery for the first time and 10th & 11th graders who wish to change their learning community. Contact your school counselor immediately if you need to enter or change your lottery requests for the 2024-2025 school year. 

This Friday is also the deadline for students entering 11th & 12th grade to submit course requests for the 2024-2025 school year. (Students entering 10th grade will submit course requests with their 10th grade counselor after spring break.)

Course Selection Ends March 22

The deadline to submit requests to the Small Learning Community lottery process is this Friday March 22, 2024 at 4:00 pm. This deadline applies to 9th graders entering the lottery for the first time and 10th & 11th graders who wish to change their learning community. Contact your school counselor immediately if you need to enter or change your lottery requests for the 2024-2025 school year. 

This Friday is also the deadline for students entering 11th & 12th grade to submit course requests for the 2024-2025 school year. (Students entering 10th grade will submit course requests with their 10th grade counselor after spring break.)

The Lawrence Hall of Science is seeking eight high school students to share their perspectives about artificial intelligence (AI) and AI ethics!

Do you need to have any prior experience learning about AI? Nope! Just curiosity and interest in sharing your perspectives.

Selected youth advisors will:

Give feedback about possible ways AI might be used in the world 

Share what’s worked for you to make online learning environments positive and engaging 

Work with other youth advisors to explore and prototype activities

Learn more about AI and AI ethics

What’s involved in being in this Youth Advisory Group?

Participation in six virtual meetings, lasting 1 – 1.5 hours each. These meetings will be scheduled based on availability; with the last meeting(s) happening in May.

Youth Advisors will receive a $200 gift card to compensate you for your expertise and for contributing your ideas and knowledge

The Berkeley Unified School District is committed to providing a hostile-free working and learning environment. Discrimination is different treatment based on a protected characteristic in the context of an educational program, work or activity without a legitimate, nondiscriminatory reason that interferes with or limits the individual’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by the District or includes an adverse employment action.

Hostile environment harassment occurs when a target is subjected to unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic, which is both subjectively offensive to the target and would be offensive to a reasonable person of similar circumstances/characteristics and is sufficiently so severe, and so pervasive to interfere with or limit an individual’s ability to effectively work or to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or opportunities offered by the District. Harassment may take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling, graphic and written statements, or any conduct that may be threatening or humiliating. Harassment based on any of the above protected categories is a form of unlawful discrimination and will not be tolerated by the District and can result in disciplinary action against the offending student or employee.

Upon witnessing an act of discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived protected characteristics, school personnel are required to take immediate steps to intervene when it is safe to do so. Once a school/office has expressed notice or reason to know of such conduct, whether carried out by employees, students, or third parties, it should take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate, determine what occurred, take prompt and effective steps reasonably calculated to end the conduct, eliminate a hostile environment, if one has been created and prevent the conduct from occurring again. Join us in calling for a Ceasefire in Gaza and Israel and fighting to learn Palestinan history. Meet us on Wed, March 13, at 11am on the senior steps (the stairs between the C and A buildings). Bring your energy, love, and blank t-shirts to print on! Afterwards, during lunch, we’ll be playing music, screen printing, and painting a mural off campus.

Hostile environment harassment occurs when a target is subjected to unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic, which is both subjectively offensive to the target and would be offensive to a reasonable person of similar circumstances/characteristics and is sufficiently so severe, and so pervasive to interfere with or limit an individual’s ability to effectively work or to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or opportunities offered by the District. Harassment may take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling, graphic and written statements, or any conduct that may be threatening or humiliating. Harassment based on any of the above protected categories is a form of unlawful discrimination and will not be tolerated by the District and can result in disciplinary action against the offending student or employee.

Upon witnessing an act of discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived protected characteristics, school personnel are required to take immediate steps to intervene when it is safe to do so. Once a school/office has expressed notice or reason to know of such conduct, whether carried out by employees, students, or third parties, it should take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate, determine what occurred, take prompt and effective steps reasonably calculated to end the conduct, eliminate a hostile environment, if one has been created and prevent the conduct from occurring again. These steps should be taken regardless of whether an individual makes a complaint or asks the school/office to take action. Complaints are protected from retaliation. The District prohibits retaliation against any person who files a complaint or an appeal, reports instances of noncompliance, discrimination, harassment, bullying, and intimidation, or who participates in the complaint-filing or investigation process. This nondiscriminatory policy applies to all acts related to school activity or school attendance within any school/office under the jurisdiction of the Berkeley Unified School District.

The Lawrence Hall of Science is seeking eight high school students to share their perspectives about artificial intelligence (AI) and AI ethics!

Do you need to have any prior experience learning about AI? Nope! Just curiosity and interest in sharing your perspectives.

We are creating an online course for high school students to learn about AI and AI ethics, and we need your help! Youth voices are critical for shaping what this course looks like, and we invite you to become a part of our Youth Advisory Group. 

Selected youth advisors will:

Share your ideas and opinions about AI, its impact on society, and how it connects with your lived experience

Give feedback about possible ways AI might be used in the world 

Share what’s worked for you to make online learning environments positive and engaging 

Work with other youth advisors to explore and prototype activities

Learn more about AI and AI ethics

What’s involved in being in this Youth Advisory Group?

Participation in six virtual meetings, lasting 1 – 1.5 hours each. These meetings will be scheduled based on availability; with the last meeting(s) happening in May.

Youth Advisors will receive a $200 gift card to compensate you for your expertise and for contributing your ideas and knowledge

The Berkeley High Jacket is opening up submission for Women’s History Month! Female identifying students are encouraged to submit a piece of art, photography, or writing by Friday, March 15th.
