image.png

The City of Berkeley will be hosting our annual 3 v 3 tournament on June 10th. This is a free event that allows students to compete in a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for a chance to see which trio can be Berkeley’s playground basketball champs.

Participants will receive a tournament jersey, catered lunch, a free basketball, and raffle tickets for an opportunity to win other prizes. Division champions will receive a championship ring! But the real thrill will be going up against friends, neighbors, and community members to see who the best is at 3-on-3!

This tournament honors Bill & Celina Rose, who were longtime pillars of the San Pablo Park community and were instrumental in the addition of the three, full-size outdoor basketball courts. The tournament started in 2012, soon after the courts were refurbished.

Notification of Non-Discrimination Policy

The Berkeley Unified School District is committed to providing a hostile-free working and learning environment. The District prohibits discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity/expression, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding/lactation status (related medical conditions), religion, color, national origin (including language restrictions and possession of a driver’s license (issued under Vehicle Code), ancestry, immigration status, physical or mental disability (including clinical depression and bipolar disorder, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, epilepsy, seizure disorder, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and heart attack), medical condition (cancer-related and genetic characteristics), military and veteran status, marital status, registered domestic partner status, age (40 and above), genetic information, political belief or affiliation (unless union related), a person’s association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics, or any other basis protected by federal, state or local law, ordinance, or regulation in any program or activity it conducts or to which it provides significant assistance.

Discrimination is different treatment based on a protected characteristic in the context of an educational program, work or activity without a legitimate, nondiscriminatory reason that interferes with or limits the individual’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by the District or includes an adverse employment action.

Hostile environment harassment occurs when a target is subjected to unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic, which is both subjectively offensive to the target and would be offensive to a reasonable person of similar circumstances/characteristics and is sufficiently so severe, and so pervasive to interfere with or limit an individual’s ability to effectively work or to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or opportunities offered by the District. Harassment may take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling, graphic and written statements, or any conduct that may be threatening or humiliating. Harassment based on any of the above protected categories is a form of unlawful discrimination and will not be tolerated by the District and can result in disciplinary action against the offending student or employee.

Upon witnessing an act of discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived protected characteristics, school personnel are required to take immediate steps to intervene when it is safe to do so. Once a school/office has expressed notice or reason to know of such conduct, whether carried out by employees, students, or third parties, it should take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate, determine what occurred, take prompt and effective steps reasonably calculated to end the conduct, eliminate a hostile environment, if one has been created and prevent the conduct from occurring again. These steps should be taken regardless of whether an individual makes a complaint or asks the school/office to take action. Complaints are protected from retaliation. The District prohibits retaliation against any person who files a complaint or an appeal, reports instances of noncompliance, discrimination, harassment, bullying, and intimidation, or who participates in the complaint-filing or investigation process. This nondiscriminatory policy applies to all acts related to school activity or school attendance within any school/office under the jurisdiction of the Berkeley Unified School District.

For more information, or to file a complaint please contact:District Title IX Coordinator/Compliance Officer Berkeley Unified School District, 2020 Bonar Street, Room 117, Berkeley CA 94702 Phone: (510) 486-9338; Email: complaints@berkeley.net

Come learn about the Science of Women Athletes

Monday May 22 at 6:30 pm, M Gym

image.png

The Berkeley Athletic Fund invites all interested students and family members to join us in conversation with award-winning sports and health journalist Christine Yu to discuss the way women can boost athletic performance, reduce injury, and stay healthy at all ages.

Join us Monday, May 22, at 6:30pm in the M Gym.  Event is free and open to all.  Books will be available for purchase.  Pre-registration appreciated, but not required.

Christine’s work focuses on the intersection of sports science and women athletes. Her exploration into this relationship between science and athletic performance and the underlying systems that exclude women became her debut book, UP TO SPEED: The Groundbreaking Science of Women Athletes (on sale: May 16, 2023).

Women deserve a system and culture of sports that help them thrive, one that’s based on science and tailored to their lived experience. UP TO SPEED explores questions like: why are women excluded from exercise physiology and sports science research, what are the implications of this data gap, and how can we empower people to excel at sports regardless of sex and gender? She disentangles myth and gender bias from real science, making a case for new approaches to help women athletes excel at every stage of life.

Yoga for Teens

The Green Yogi, a local yoga studio is offering a new class for teenagers! The class is called “Inner Compass” and it takes place every Wednesday from 7:15-8:30pm at our studio on Telegraph Ave. The first class is free so please come check it out. There is no need to sign up in advance. This class is designed for teens stepping into their journey of body awareness, self-reflection, movement, meditation, and breathing.

Through practicing yoga, meditating, dancing, journaling, and being given opportunities to share and lead, we will aim to become more connected to ourselves and others. A connection to the self allows us to unlock a newfound resilience and empowerment. When we feel resilient and empowered, we move away from affirming our value from others.

We will explore themes like body positivity, raising your vibration, saying NO, and boundaries.  The green yogi is a completely judgment free zone!

Join the BHS School Safety Committee

Did you know that there is a committee of parents, teachers, students and staff responsible for supporting a safe school environment at BHS? The BHS School Safety Committee has an important job to do, and we need your help. Their responsibilities include drafting next year’s school safety plan that outlines what to do in case of a safety emergency. They also organize an open public meeting about School Safety Plans, and they consult with community members, such as city officials and the Berkeley Police Department to develop policy ideas and collect data.

Supporting a safe school environment involves everybody. If you have 20-30 hours of volunteer time available during the upcoming school year, and want to be actively involved in safety issues, including disaster preparedness, guns and weapons, bullying and harassment, drug use and abuse, this is a great opportunity to make a positive contribution.

Yoga for Teens

image.png

Help BUSD School Become More Sustainable

image.png

Have you ever wondered about the impact that BHS has on the environment in the midst of climate change? Do you want to be part of a group of student activists working to make Berkeley High and other BUSD schools more sustainable? Join the electrification campaign at Berkeley High! We are a group of students who want to get BUSD schools to start using electric appliances that don’t rely on fossil fuels. Being part of this group would mean helping educate students about the importance of clean energy use in schools, drafting a policy resolution, designing posters, and talking to school board members. All students are invited to join regardless of their current amount of knowledge about this topic!  Please email naominickolaus@students.berkeley.net to get involved. The meeting times will be based on the availability of people who want to join.

Thank you!
