Weekly Volunteer Opportunities
Emi Rohn, Chief of Service is posting weekly volunteer opportunities on the
Chief of Service Instagram. Most of these volunteer opportunities fall into three categories: local volunteering, virtual volunteering, or donations, and they’re a great way for students to get more involved in the community. This week, consider donating masks, gloves, and other goods to the City of Berkeley. Check out the link in the bulletin for more details on the what and how. Thanks!

That’s why we’re excited to bring Meatless Mondays to Berkeley Schools! Check out our daily posts on the leadership Instagram, @Juicethejackets, and look out for Meatless Mondays starting February 6th. Join us in bettering our world one meat-free meal at a time!  Stay tuned, and stay sustainable! Schedule:  Tuesday – EnvironmentWednesday – Animal WelfareThursday – Personal HealthFriday – looking forward… how to participate in Meatless Mondays in the future!

Here is an update from the BHS Supply Center:
We are open every Tuesday from 1:30 – 3:30 to distribute textbooks, novels, readers, materials, or whatever. This is ongoing until the end of the year. At the first week of each term we will add an additional distribution day on a Thursday. The Library Team (Ms. Rosenkrantz, Ms. Irby, and Ms. Fitzhugh) will also be open in the same location on Thursdays to hand out library books and the like. Remember to visit the BHS Library catalog and place hold there first in order to start the process.

The big change is that we are moving INSIDE! We will be set up at the glass doors of the breezeway. Students in cars can park on Milvia and walk to the doors, and students on foot or on bikes can just come straight to the doors.
Can’t make it? Request a TASK RUNNER.

Contact the Library Team if you have any questions.

SATISFY YOUR COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS WHILE HELPING BERKELEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS!

For high schoolers, there are 2 primary pathways into Berkeley Schools Volunteers (BSV), which is a program of the Berkeley Public Schools Fund:

1. Students who can give at least an hour every week could join Berkeley Schools Volunteers (BSV) as a “Distance Learning Volunteer.” These volunteers complete BSV’s onboarding training and then get matched with a BUSD Host Teacher (at the grade level and subject area of their choosing). They support online – in whole group Zooms, in small groups, or even in 1:1 breakouts. They might also help their Host Teacher review students’ asynchronous work. The distance learning volunteer application is HERE and we have several orientations in January.

2. Students who have time every once in a while can join Berkeley Schools Volunteer’s COVID-response email list to get notified about and sign up for other district-wide projects. Some projects are ongoing, like staffing the Ed Hub every Tues/Thurs afternoon (BUSD’s central distribution site for tech and learning tools) or joining BSV’s Tech Support team (to answer student and family tech questions asynchronously). BSV also has periodic one-time events like assembling science kits, or restoring a school garden. COVID-response volunteers receive about 2 emails each month with ongoing BUSD volunteer opportunities.
Students can sign up to join BSV’s COVID-response email list HERE.
We hope many of you can join us on the front lines of BUSD’s COVID-response during this very difficult year.
Please reach out with any questions: duffyross@berkeley.net

My name is Samuel Alber and I’m a student at UC Berkeley. My colleague Tavisha Thapar and I are creating a panel event called SCOPE, which aims to help high school students discover their academic interests and spark their curiosities. It is often difficult for high school students to gauge what they’re interested in since there are too many fields and subfields for high school to cover in-depth. We hope to mitigate that by providing a place for students to listen to a panel of leading experts from a variety of fields. The event will be on Saturday, February 6th from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. over Zoom. Each professor will give a quick presentation on their research and then take questions from the audience. Our panel will consist of professors Robert Tjian (Biochemistry), Josh Bloom (Astrophysics), David Card (Economics), Karina Palau (Comparative Literature), and Jill Berrick (Social Welfare).  Would it be possible for Berkeley High School to publicize this event to its students? We have attached a flyer to this email. The link for sign-ups is tinyurl.com/SCOPE-signup

Do you have broken stuff?
Essential Repair Skills Training
Why not learn to fix your stuff instead of sending it to landfill and spending money on replacements?  In these training sessions you will learn hands-on skills in how to diagnose and repair your broken belongings. You’ll also learn about the impact of throwing stuff away and how you can do your part to help the environment.

The training will run from January 29 to April 30, 2021, meeting once a week, via Zoom, Fridays, 3-4pm. Sessions will be taught by Cal students, along with community repair experts.  The January 29 session will be a brief introduction, an overview of repair concepts will start in February, then in mid-February the class will focus on hands-on repair training sessions covering basic electronics, such as phones and tablets; appliances, such as lamps and headphones; clothing; bicycles and skateboards.

The training will wrap up with a survey, asking participants to reflect on what they learned and next steps in terms of further learning, internships and career opportunities.  Certificates of completion will be given to students who attend the sessions and successfully complete the course and survey. The class will be limited to 10 students, with a waiting list to accommodate other interested students.

Contact info@transitionberkeley.org or call 510-332-9456 for more info and to enroll.

NEW JAN 31 deadline Sr. Portraits / Sr. Quotes / Grad Survey Results / Transcripts & Missing Books?

Hello Seniors,

We appreciate the feedback that we received on the first graduation brainstorm survey in December. About 20% of your classmates completed the survey, so we really only have a snippet of the opinions and sentiments from your class. However, it is clear that 2021 wants a “walk across the stage” moment. At this time in January, it is hard to say exactly what graduation will look like later in May or June. We will seek examples from other high schools and talk with BUSD/BHS staff that would be involved in any format of grad event to formulate potential options for our own graduation. The ceremony may not look exactly how we want it, but you will definitely be acknowledged and honored for your achievement! Notwithstanding, Dr. Stephens, BUSD superintendent, did specify in the December 3rd Town Hall meeting that any large gathering is unlikely even later in the spring and he outlined the reasons for his comments as you can watch for yourself. We anticipate reaching out with more info later this month or early February.
Be on the lookout for information about senior shirts or other activities from the Class of 2021 Leadership Instagram. @berkeleyseniors21
Senior Letter – As more information about senior activities and events pops up, we will post it all on the Senior Letter, share via email and the BHS e-tree, as well as any BHS socials. If you have any questions please reach out.

Registrar’s Office website – On this website , there are links on how to obtain copies of official transcripts, duplicate diplomas, work permits, concurrent enrollment forms, etc. In addition, here is a note about how academic counselors can assist with transcript requests to schools that are listed on the Common App. If you don’t see what you need, Email bhsregistrar@berkeley.net as they are happy to help…..

BHS Library & Textbooks – Be proactive if you know you have any missing or lost books.  The BHS Library will be understanding of any difficulty with replacing lost or missing books, so contact Nicole Fitzhugh, Textbook Room Clerk. Seniors won’t receive their high school diplomas until they return all their textbooks and library books back to the textbook room and library.

>>>NEW DEADLINE>>>Senior Portraits – BHS Yearbook will accept up to 2 pics following these specific guidelines (linked here) by 11:59 PM on January 31st. If you do not submit a senior portrait, BHS Yearbook may use your junior year photo instead. If you need support, contact via Instagram @berkeleyearbook or email bhsyearbook@berkeley.net.

Week of January 4th part 2
Statement about the January 6th Violence in the U.S. Capitol
Berkeley High represents many things great about public education.
What we do not represent nor support are the white supremacist views and white privilege that continues to suppress the advancement of all people. While what took place in Washington D.C. yesterday can be described with various names like coup, insurrection, or by the less aware as a a protest, it was all of those things masquerading as a desire to resist giving up white supremacist control. There is a rising consciousness taking place in the hearts and minds of most young people, a change happening in this country that threatens those who wish to hold onto the power that is brought to them by a system built on white supremacy. Wednesday white supremacy took the form of storming a federal building, but today it could resemble something much more acute. At this point in time, silence is no longer acceptable. When you see something, say something or learn how to speak up by asking for help to do so. Read from more diverse literature to gain a wider perspective about ALL the people living in this country and world. The silence and lack of understanding has built from a single pebble to a mountain of tolerance. And Berkeley High does not stoop to tolerating things. Berkeley High stands for acceptance which requires a higher level of understanding and compassion. You may be able tolerate wet socks, but you definitely shouldn’t accept drowning in a sea of misinformation, racism, and other inequities just to get by each day. We saw what happens when seemingly small breaches of norms are allowed to continue without consequence. It is on each one of us to do the anti racist work and to push our institution to do the same. Berkeley High can remain an amazing place to learn all of these things and it will require each member of the community to step up.
