I hope this post finds you well. I’m Lyndon Ward, a BIHS senior and Berkeley High’s 2020-2021 Chief of Clubs. Thank you all for being the student leaders that bring together and help shape Berkeley High’s communities. Clubs, now more than ever, represent an essential part of student life at Berkeley High for they provide space for expression, passion, ideas, and hobbies. Given that this year will be virtual, it is important to find new ways to stay connected to each other. With that being said an important part of connection is outreach and what better way to reach out then a club fair! This year’s Fall Semester club fair will be held virtually and have a few key differences: The focus days of the week will be as follows: Monday (9/21): Academic Tuesday (9/22): Cultural Wednesday (9/23): Activist Thursday ( 9/24): Leadership Friday (9/25): Miscellaneous Given that the club fair will be hosted over a week, clubs will have the chance to host club panels. These club panels will be held by the clubs that fit under the day’s “focus”. Following an introduction from the clubs at the beginning of the panel, each club will move to breakout rooms where they can interact more personally with the students attending. Next Monday, September 21st, is Zero Emissions Day: a global, 24-hour break from the use of fossil fuels. The guidelines are simple: don’t use or burn oil, gas, or coal, and minimize or eliminate your use of electricity generated by fossil fuels. As the holiday approaches, we’ll be sharing some ways you can reduce your carbon footprint on the BHS leadership Instagram account (@juicethejackets). Finally, on Zero Emissions Day we’ll be having a “Bike Berkeley” event, with suggested routes to explore our city on two wheels. Stay tuned, and stay sustainable! Hey Berkeley High!! We are the SF Bay Area Chapter of the international organization “Zero Waste Youth.” We strive to provide opportunities and resources for young adults and high schoolers who want to contribute to the zero waste movement. UC Berkeley is piloting a weekly panel series (via Zoom) exclusively to Berkeley High, starting on September 23rd. The panels will feature presentations from graduate students, faculty, and researchers on current social issues: the environment, poverty, democracy, race, education, health, gender, and the covid recession. If you or someone you know has been harmed by drugs, if you’re interested in learning and teaching factual information to keep drug users safe, or you believe that education and support is preferable to stigma and punishment, then HERO might be your cup of tea. We need people of all backgrounds and viewpoints because drugs affect all of us in different ways. You can be as involved as deeply as you want, from class presentations, to making art, to brainstorming ideas to reach the masses. The point is to make this yours, make it relevant, and make it fun. Dear Alameda County High School Administrators, Students & Teachers, We are following mandates from County and State COVID-19 requirements. Personal Protective Equipment will be provided during training and voting dates.Student Election Workers are in great demand as they are needed for their knowledgeable skills in laptops, printers, and tablets. The Harm Education Response Organization at BHS is looking for students passionate about their fellow students’ safety and wellbeing around substance use. Club activities include biweekly organization and planning meetings, creating and leading games, doing class presentations, making artwork and memes, discussion circles, educational opportunities, making videos, posting on social media, moderated hang sessions, planning events, and anything else that you can think of. If you purchased or planned to purchase a 2019-2020 yearbook, the BHS Yearbook staff will send out a schoolwide message to let everyone know how to pick them up. If you ordered a yearbook to be sent to your house, they should ship out in the next week or so (as of 9.3.2020). Similarly, more information will be shared about Senior Portraits, School Photos, and IDs once BHS has more guidance from the Berkeley Public Health Department.
