Beginning Modern/Jazz Dance (P) Year · 10 Credits
This course introduces students to the specific dance techniques of famous choreographers from the Modern/ Jazz movement in American dance, beginning in the early 20th Century. Students study the influential styles of Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, Merce Cunningham and contemporary choreographers. Daily practice includes technical training; improvisation and creative composition; informal performances of solo/ group choreography. This course may be taken as P.E. or Performing Arts credit. Advanced Dance/Dance Projects (P) Year · 10 Credits
Advanced Dance: Advanced dance techniques and choreographic forms. Students are expected to have a high level of technical ability, as well as a comfortable knowledge of choreographic elements. Course syllabus may include: improvisational performance structures, master classes with guest choreographers, research projects, performance critiques, field trips to live performances. Students perform in informal public performances. This course may be taken for P.E. or Performing Arts credit. Prerequisite: “C” or better in Beginning Dance and teacher recommendation. UC/CSU (f)
Dance Projects: Advanced dance techniques, choreography and research into various areas of danceas teaching, therapy and performance. Class culminates in a concert featuring live music. Students interested in both dance and music are encouraged to enroll. Students are required to attend rehearsals outside of class time. This course may be taken as P.E. or Performing Arts credit. Dance Production/Choreography (P) Year · 10
Credits Dance Production: Advanced dance techniques and choreography, culminating in formal dance concert. Students are required to attend rehearsals outside of class time. This course may be taken for P.E. or Performing Arts credit. Prerequisite: By auditions only, held in the previous spring. UC/CSU (f) Choreography: This course is designed for experienced dancers interested in expanding their knowledge of choreographic techniques. Assignments may include improvisational performance scores, outdoor performances, and interdisciplinary projects combining text, dance and music. This course functions as a dance company, creating and producing a show with two distinct components: at least one piece directed by local Master Choreographer along with collaborative student choreography of an original work based on a theme. Students are required to attend rehearsals outside of class time. This course may be taken for P.E. credit. UC/CSU (f)
